Boxing legend Pernell Whitaker, 55, has died, according to TMZ.

The southpaw boxer was hit by a car on Sunday night in Virginia Beach.

Whitaker, also known as "Sweet Pea," was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006 and is considered one of the best boxers all all time. He won titles at lightweight, light welterweight and light middleweight.

He fought between 1984 and 2001 and retired with a 40-4-1 record, including 17 knockouts. He also won a gold medal at the 1985 Summer Olympics.

Whitaker fought Anthony Jones in 1991 at Caesars Palace; Rafael Pineda in 1992 at the Mirage; and Oscar De La Hoya at the Thomas & Mack Center in 1997.

The driver stayed on the scene. Police are still investigating.
