BRIDGEWATER, Va. (AP) — Two officers were shot and killed at a private Virginia college and a man believed to be the shooter was taken into custody.

Bridgewater College issued a statement Tuesday evening saying police had apprehended a suspect after searching the campus.

The school told students in a tweet at around 2 p.m. that a suspect was in custody but that they should shelter in place.

The school sounded the all-clear about 4:30 p.m.

The officers were identified as Campus Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson.

Authorities did not discuss a possible motive for the shooting.

Bridgewater College is located about an hour's drive northwest of Charlottesville.

The school describes itself as a "private liberal arts college" that was founded in 1880. The school says it has an enrollment of about 1,800 students.
