The day-to-day manager of Nevada's second most populous city is retiring, citing health issues.

Henderson City Manager Robert Murnane announced his retirement Monday with a statement that said he has undergone treatment for an unspecified serious illness.

Murnane was public works, parks and recreation administrator before being promoted to city manager in August 2015. He has been with the city since 1996.

Chief Financial Officer and Assistant City Manager Richard Derrick was named acting city manager.

Murnane was instrumental in creating a community education advisory board to direct revenue from recreational marijuana sales to Henderson schools.

He also initiated talks that led to the sale of 55 acres to the Oakland Raiders for a new corporate headquarters and football practice facility once the team moves to nearby Las Vegas.
