NYE COUNTY (KTNV) — Two Nye County sheriff's deputies are facing multiple charges after an investigation into the in-custody death of 30-year-old Stevie Miller in June.
Miller, of Pahrump, was arrested after a high-speed pursuit on Highway 160 on June 9, in which the Nye County Sheriff's Office said she fled on foot after colliding with multiple vehicles.
According to the sheriff's office, Miller appeared to be uninjured from the crash but did appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She was taken to a Desert View Hospital for a blood draw before being transported to the Nye County Detention Center.
After appearing in Pahrump Justice Court on June 10, Miller was later found the same day unresponsive in her cell, the sheriff's office said. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"As a result of this in-custody death, an Administrative Investigation and a Criminal Investigation began immediately," Nye County Sheriff Joe McGill said in a press release issued Sunday. "As a result of the Criminal Investigation, Probable Cause was developed leading to an Arrest Warrant for two NCSO Deputies."
The sheriff's office said investigators received the signed warrant from the judge on Sunday and made contact with the deputies through their union representation. Both deputies, who were not identified Sunday, "surrendered for booking." According to Nye County Detention Center booking records, the two deputies are Kyle Benes and Carlos Luna.
Benes and Luna are charged with inhumanity to prisoner, neglect of duty resulting in death and involuntary manslaughter.
"There will be no further release of information on this case due to being an on-going criminal investigation and an on-going internal investigation," Sheriff McGill said.
