LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Clark County School District is rolling out a new feeder school project aimed at giving students more tutoring and support in literacy and mathematics.

The program has been two years in the making. It spans 18 schools in its first year and is designed to improve student continuity from pre-K through high school, ensuring students understand and comprehend what they are being taught. Counselors will also help students focus on what path will set them up for success after high school, whether that is a trade or higher education.

At Western High School Saturday, parents and teachers spoke about how they plan to use the new program.

Hema Hernandez, a mother with two children still in CCSD, has a senior she wishes had this opportunity sooner.

"While Victoria didn't have the benefit of a feeder system her hard work shows why this matters," Hernandez said.

Hernandez said when talking to teachers about the program, if it had been implemented earlier, her daughter could have been better set up for success, with a stronger focus on literacy and mathematics. Depending on where a student's education level is, some will receive remedial support and others will receive advanced learning.

"With alignment in place earlier her transition into college courses would've been so much smoother. Locking in even more college credits towards her future degree," Hernandez said.

Hernandez's other child is in 8th grade, giving her time to see the program work.

"She will have a seamless path right into dual enrollment. Building college credits with confidence from day one all because her middle and high school teachers will be on the exact same page," Hernandez said.

Abigail Johnson, an 11th grade English teacher and department chair at Western, is part of the curriculum team rolling out the feeder program. She said the team wanted the program to feel engaging to students rather than different.

"Already started to conduct classroom walkthroughs at our school to re-emphasize the importance of discourse in our classrooms, really getting students to talk about the standards to demonstrate their understanding," Johnson said.

Johnson said the goal is to better set students up for success, helping to raise not only graduation rates but college acceptance.

"If they start with us in kindergarten, by the time they're getting to us in ninth grade, they're already ready to go," Johnson said.

Many students are already giving teachers feedback less than a month into the program.

"It's the shift in their behavior that we're starting to see because the 10th grade team did such a great job of preparing them," Johnson said.

As the program continues throughout the school year, parents will receive weekly feedback and should start to see gradual growth in their child's education.
