NORTH LAS VEGAS (KTNV) -- The North Las Vegas Police Department Traffic Division investigated a fatal crash this morning involving a bicycle.
Police say at 9:41 a.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the area of West Cheyenne Avenue and North Decatur Boulevard after receiving multiple calls about a traffic collision.
When medical personnel arrived they transported one person to UMC Trauma, where he later died.
Police say the preliminary investigation revealed that an older model Kia Rio was traveling westbound on Cheyenne approaching Decatur.
A bicyclist was traveling eastbound on the north sidewalk of Cheyenne. The bicyclist, for reasons unknown at this time, rode off the sidewalk and into the westbound travel lane of Cheyenne, where he was struck by the Kia.
The bicyclist then became trapped underneath the Kia. Several witnesses to the crash ran to the Kia, lifted the vehicle onto its side, and pulled the bicyclist free.
The bicyclist was a 49-year-old man. The driver of the Kia is a 58-year-old woman.
The driver was also transported to a local hospital and is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
Authorities say speed and impairment are not believed to be factors at this time.
Westbound lanes on Cheyenne were closed from Decatur to Valley View but have since reopened.
The identities of the bicyclist and driver have not yet been released.
