It may be the weekend before Thanksgiving, but for some, it's going to feel more like the weekend before Christmas.

A large cold front bringing the first significant snow to the Midwest and the Plains this weekend is also bringing some extra chilly air to most of the country.

Temperatures in some places will be at least 10 or 15 degrees colder than what they usually are this time of year.

Fortunately, this cold spell looks like it'll be brief - at least in the eastern half of the country.

Long term forecasts show another big pattern shift by the time Thanksgiving rolls around.

That's about the time warmer air is expected to return to the eastern half of the country while some frigid air continues to linger in the West, especially the Pacific Northwest.

The beginning of winter is still roughly a month away, so in the meantime, we better get used to these wild swings that are so typical in the fall.
