More than 1,000 needy families received a turkey for the Thanksgiving holiday this weekend.

Several charities, led by the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, teamed up to give away 1,800 turkeys on Saturday near Bonanza and Sandhill roads. Another 2,000 turkeys are expected to be given away by Thanksgiving on Thursday.

"Thanksgiving should be something we celebrate as a community regardless of age, gender, background," said John Fogal, of the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. "All those kinds of things as a community we should be willing to reach out to anyone who needs help."
