Clark County Commissioners and representatives from the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada turned the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign red Wednesday in honor of the 100th anniversary of the local Red Cross chapter.

The Southern Nevada chapter was established in June 1917 by a group of local women who rolled bandages and knitted sweaters, socks, and caps to support those fighting in World War I. They gained members and increased their efforts helping those in need during the Great Depression and supporting our troops during World War II. They added CPR and first aid training courses and swim classes over the years, in addition to continuing to respond to local disasters.

County Commissioners and representatives from the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada turned on red light bulbs installed on the world-famous welcome sign during a brief ceremony in front of the sign. The light bulbs, which are usually yellow, surround the border of the sign.
