Gov. Steve Sisolak has recognized Mr. Al Camp of Carson City as Veteran of the Month (VOM) and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 730 Service Office in Henderson as Veteran Supporter of the Month (VSM) for January 2021.

Camp, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, is an active member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked as a Financial Aid Advisor with Western Nevada College and later worked for the Nevada Department of Veteran Services (NDVS) as a Veterans Service Officer (VSO). Although he retired from NDVS, he continues to be an advocate for veterans and assists the residents of the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home (NNSVH) as their dedicated service officer.

In the years since his retirement from the Navy, he also has been a supporter of the active duty community where he has worked to ensure that service members have the information needed to successfully transition into civilian life.

He also supports youth programs throughout northern Nevada such as the Boy Scouts, Boys State and Oratorical Contests.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 730 Service Office is comprised of volunteers who help veterans, widows of veterans, and their dependents with veteran affairs, records requests, claims and letters. The office also works to support the Vietnam Veterans of America chapters and Student Veterans of the Nevada State College.

This office also works to support service members with pre-discharge requirements, and partners with the Nevada Army National Guard Family Assistance Program. The office has assisted more than 3,600 veterans and family members since it opened in 2018.

Due to the pandemic, the VOM and VSM ceremonies have been postponed.

The VOM is awarded to veterans across Nevada who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, specifically with respect to volunteer work in support of veterans and the military.

The VSM award recognizes both organizations and non-veteran Nevada community members who support military members stationed in Nevada, Nevada veterans, and their families.
