Tortoise Group is holding a 4-hour tortoise adoption event for free at the Petco at 8495 West Warm Springs on April 1st from noon to 4 p.m. The group is a non-profit organization that works with Clark County, Nevada Department of Wildlife, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The event is designed to raise awareness, as Tortoise Group estimates there are several hundred tortoises in need of new homes in Nevada.

“We have tons of supply but almost no demand,” said Kobbe Shaw, Executive  Director of Tortoise Group, referring to the supply of unwanted tortoises. “I honestly think it’s a matter of public awareness –
whenever we show a tortoise at a fair or expo, everyone freaks out and wants one. It’s just a matter of letting people know that they can adopt a desert tortoise safely and legally.”

Tortoise Group will also waive all adoption fees at Petco from March 31 through April 2.
