Events to celebrate Earth Day 2016 in Las Vegas

Looking for a way to celebrate our planet this weekend? Several events are being held Friday and Saturday for Earth Day, which is actually April 22.

Earth Day Festival at Downtown Container Park -- April 22
The festival will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. There will be kids gardening activities, speakers and demonstrations, drum circle at sundown and family movie "The Lorax" at 7:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, there will be the CCSD Student Farmers Market from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a garden dedication from 2-2:30 p.m. Learn more on the Facebook event.

suS·TAIN·ABLE Earth Day event at Town Square -- April 22-23
Town Square Las Vegas celebrates Earth Day with a two-day sus·tain·able festival for individuals to discover helpful tips and tactics on how to live green in Las Vegas. It will go from 3-7 p.m. Friday, April 22, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Town Square Park. Patrons can enjoy beer tastings, chef demonstrations and live entertainment as well as hands-on activities for children.
 
In addition, the City of Las Vegas’ Keep Las Vegas Beautiful Program, in conjunction with the Clark County School District School-Community Partnership Program, Star Nursery and Republic Services of Southern Nevada is hosting its sixth annual Earth Day Every Day Youth Art and Essay contest for students in elementary, middle and high schools. Winners will be announced on Saturday, April 23, at 3 p.m. and cash prizes sponsored by Republic Services of Southern Nevada will be given to the top three winning students of each age group and their teachers. Submitted artwork by the winners and runners-up will also be on display at a later date at City Hall.

GREENFest at Downtown Summerlin -- April 23
GREENFest, co-founded by the GREEN Alliance and Republic Services, celebrates Earth Day, sustainability and the local community. The event, held on the lawn at Downtown Summerlin, is free and open to the public for all ages. The event features more than 150 exhibitors in sustainability zones such as Green Vehicle Drive, Green Building & Smart Energy, Green Homes & Living, Connect with Nature, Artists Behind Earth Day and Sustainable Community. Other event attractions include interactive displays, arts and crafts, marketplace, beer and wine garden, kids zone, pet adoptions, petting zoo,  live entertainment and conservation exhibits to create a more enjoyable and sustainable lifestyle.
 
GREENFest also features the Drive Clean Energy Las Vegas procession to include hybrids, electric vehicles, compressed natural gas, electric bikes, e-scooters, fleet, personal and company vehicles. Open and free to participate, vehicle owners can go to GREENFestLV.com/procession to register. Participants will gather at 8 a.m. at Las Vegas Cyclery and proceed to GREENFest at Downtown Summerlin at 9 a.m. arriving at GREENFest to kick off the celebration.
