LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A spokesperson with the SAHARA Las Vegas denied a rumor that the property may be closing later this year.

Thursday, a report of the property permanently closing in September surfaced, but a few hours later that claim was said to unfounded by the SAHARA Las Vegas.

Additionally, a SAHARA Las Vegas spokesperson released the following on Thursday evening:

"The social media rumor concerning a planned closure of SAHARA Las Vegas is completely false. SAHARA Las Vegas has no plans to close either temporarily or otherwise. SAHARA Las Vegas owner Alex Meruelo remains deeply committed to the project and is continuing with the resorts’ $150 million transformation."

Along with a statement from the property's president and general manager:

“We typically refrain from responding to internet gossip, however, given these current unprecedented times we felt it important to address these rumors head on to reassure our team members and guests,” said Paul Hobson, SAHARA Las Vegas president and general manager. “We have been delighted to welcome guests back to the resort since reopening on June 4 following the government-mandated closure. We look forward to continuing to welcome guests well into the future.”

The Las Vegas economy continues to find its way through the ongoing pandemic since the reopening of casinos on June 4.

Gambling and travel have been slow to recover with key casino house winnings index down 45.5% when compared to the previous year, but the almost $567 million reported in statewide “gaming win” for June was an improvement from near-zero in April and May due to the coronavirus closures.
