Nellis Air Force Base was named after Lieutenant William Nellis.

Nellis graduated from Las Vegas High School before serving in World War II as a fighter pilot. He was killed in action in 1944 on his 69th mission.

Nellis had already served enough time to be able to come home, but he wanted to keep fighting. His son Gary says he misses him every day, but he is proud of his father.

There will be a live interview with Gary Nellis at 11 a.m. Friday on 13 Action News at Midday.
