A semi hauling more than $800,000 in dimes for the U.S. Treasury Department was involved in a crash on Interstate 15 Tuesday.

Around 3:30 a.m., a silver Volvo Tractor Trailer was southbound on I-15 at mile marker 101 near Glendale. For unknown reasons, the driver of the tractor lost control causing the tractor to strike the right guardrail. The tractor continued south and entered the dirt/desert terrain where the tractor and trailer overturned.

In the tractor were a male driver and female passenger. Both were transported to UMC Trauma with non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of the crash, the trailer's load was breached. The tractor and trailer, which is contracted by the United States Treasury Department, was hauling approximately $800,000 in dimes.

The Nevada Highway Patrol established a secure crime scene until an approved recovery team could arrive on scene and collect the currency. The scene was cleared by 10:30 a.m.

The driver of the tractor was issued a citation for failure to drive within marked lanes.
