Tips to protect your plants, pets as colder weather arrives in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Las Vegas started December with record warmth, but colder temperatures are on the horizon after a series of systems brings a blast of winter ahead of the weekend.

Low temperatures fall to the mid to upper 30s Saturday and Sunday mornings and 13 Action News has tips to prepare for colder weather.

Have you checked your heater? Turn it on to make sure it's working probably and remember to change your air filters.

With the dip in temperatures, you may notice the tire pressure warning come on in your car, this can be normal when the temperatures drop suddenly by ten degrees or more.

When it comes to protecting plants, professionals get concerned about sensitive plants when it gets below 34 degrees.

A cheap and easy way to protect your outdoor plants is to drape fabric over them.

If the plants are in pots, bring them inside or place them in your garage.

If it's cold for you, it's probably cold for your pets too.

Previously 13 Action News talked to a veterinarian that said to make sure your pets have enough water and to feed them a little more because colder weather requires more calories in the morning.

Is your car parked outside? If so, you may want to tap on your hood in case cats crawled in the engine block where it's warm.

For outdoor pets, make sure they have a warm shelter and blankets.

While pipes won't freeze above 32º, here are some tips to prepare as we near those temperatures in the coming months.

  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses when they are not being used.
  • Wrap exposed irrigation pipes with pipe insulation, insulated "faucet socks," an old towel, or heat or duct tape.
  • Plumbers also say not to turn off the heat completely when you're out of the house.
