Smoke from a trash chute fire spread onto multiple floors of a high-rise apartment building Monday evening.

Around 6:46 p.m., Clark County firefighters responded to a reported fire at the Vegas Towers, 1065 E. Flamingo Road, near Maryland Parkway and north of UNLV. Callers reported smoke on the ninth floor.

Upon arrival crews were advised that the fire was located in the trash chute on the first floor. The fire in the trash chute was quickly extinguished. However, smoke migrated up through the floors of the building through the elevator shafts. Interior crews reported moderate smoke on floors two through nine.

The incident commander requested a second alarm at 6:54 pm. Some residents self evacuated from the structure while others sheltered in place in their apartments.

Crews using electric fans quickly removed all the smoke from the structure.

There were no injuries reported and no residents were displaced. Damage from the fire was contained to the dumpster connected to the trash chute.
