A Reno man has been sentenced to up to 13 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

KRNV-TV reported Tuesday that 54-year-old Fernando James Valle Sr.'s seven prior felony convictions played a part in his sentencing.

Detectives began investigating Valle after they learned he had sold ammunition to a Carson City pawn shop on three occasions between November 2015 and March 2016.

Detectives also learned that Valle and a female had entered a Reno pawn shop in April 2016 and pawned a shotgun.

Assistant District Attorney Bruce Hahn argued that Valle fit the Nevada Supreme Court criteria of increasing the penalty for recidivist felons.

Valle pleaded guilty in October to one count of a prohibited person owning or possessing a firearm.
