Police are investigating after a body was found on the road near Alta Drive and Decatur Boulevard.

The incident was reported around 8 p.m. The 64-year-old man who was hit was either sitting or lying in the road at the time of the crash.

A Pontiac Trans Sport was traveling eastbound on Alta Drive when the driver observed a car in front of him swerve to avoid the pedestrian, however, the Pontiac was unable to avoid him. The Pontiac then drove over the pedestrian.

Medical personnel later pronounced the man dead at the scene.

In the moments after the crash, investigators believed this was a hit-and-run involving two vehicles.  They requested the public's help to find the vehicle believed to have fled.

However, further investigation revealed that first vehicle did not strike the pedestrian.

The initial witness statements were determined to be inaccurate.

This was a complicated scene for detectives. That was partly due to the position of the pedestrian on the road.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the deceased.

This is the 26th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction in 2016. The crash remains under investigation.
