UPDATE AUG. 10: The Clark County Coroner has identified the woman who was killed as 32-year-old Leana Flowers from Las Vegas. Flowers' cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest and it has been ruled a homicide.

Homicide detectives say a woman was inside an apartment in east Las Vegas when a man shot her with a high-powered rifle, killing her.

Officers responded to reports of the shooting around 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Summerhill Apartments near Owens Avenue and Pecos Road.

There, they found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

At least five or six people, possibly more, ran away from the police when they arrived, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lt. Ray Spencer.

It is unclear at this time what the relationship is between the woman and the shooter.

Police say the woman lived in the apartment.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the police or CrimeStoppers.

Lt. Spencer stressed, the information is preliminary and the shooting remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
