Officer and recruiter Brent Garcia for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said this year they want to hire 250 new officers as well as 250 new hires for the year after that. Last year, the department hired 600 new people.

Garcia says there are three main reasons for all the recruitment: the Vegas Golden Knights, the Raiders, and a revitalization happening in downtown Las Vegas. They need many different kinds of officers.

A lot of the money making this possible is coming through a slight increase in countywide sales tax. It was passed by Clark county commissioners in 2016.

"This job is for someone who's not a regular person. You have to be willing to risk your life for a complete stranger," said Garcia.

LVMPD holds fitness training at Police Memorial Park every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 6:30 a.m. It's not easy to become an officer, but they want to give you every tool possible to succeed.
