LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — It appears that there are fewer people living in shelters or on the streets this year in Clark County.

The homeless count took place over 2 days in January.

County employees and volunteers counted 5,300 people. That is the lowest number since the survey began 12 years ago.

The highest count was in 2009 when more than 13,000 people were counted.

The count is needed in order to receive federal grants to help the homeless.
