Nearly half of those in Britain want Prince Charles to stand aside and allow his son, Prince William, to take the throne as king when Queen Elizabeth dies.

A survey conducted on behalf of The Independent by BMG Research shows 46 percent of people want Prince Charles to abdicate when the time comes.

Twenty percent say Charles' wife, Camilla, should take the title of Queen if he becomes the next monarch, The Independent reports. Charles and Camilla are the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

He is the longest-serving heir apparent in British history because his mother, who is 92 years old, has served as Queen since her father George VI's death in 1952.

Prince Charles turned 70 in December 2018. Many reports say Her Majesty's son has no plans to step aside should the Queen die, and he be named King.

Thirteen percent of those surveyed say they "strongly oppose" the idea of Prince Charles stepping aside for William to be promoted to King.

The idea of Prince William replacing Queen Elizabeth is most popular with survey takers in the age range of 18 to 24, The Independent reports.
