The FBI is opening a domestic terrorism investigation into the shooting that happened at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, authorities said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Crowds scrambled to escape July 29 when a 19-year-old man wearing tactical gear and carrying an assault-style rifle started firing at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California.

Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said the gunman had sneaked into the festival by cutting a hole in the fence.

Three people — 6-year-old Stephen Romero, 13-year-old Keyla Salazar and 25-year-old Trevor Irby — were killed, and 16 people others were wounded.

Authorities said during the press conference that the shooter had a list of possible targets comprised of organizations "from across the country," including federal buildings, courthouses, political organizations and the Gilroy Garlic Festival. The FBI will not be releasing or confirming any of the targets at this time.
