A University of South Florida football player is in the hospital after being shot near Tampa, Florida late Saturday night.
Police say that Hassan Childs pointed a gun at Jovanni Jimenez and his wife because of a road rage incident. Jimanez told investigators that he shot Childs three times in self-defense.
Childs was taken to the hospital and is listed in stable condition. Childs is a defensive back for the USF football team.
Childs played in eight games for the Bulls in 2016. After sitting out the 2015 season due to a knee injury, Childs is slated to be a fifth-year senior during the 2017 season.
USF head football coach Charlie Strong said in a statement:
"We are deeply concerned that an incident occurred overnight in which one of our players, Hassan Childs, was injured in a shooting. Thankfully, Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured. There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time."
No one has been arrested in connection to this incident. The Hillsborough State Attorney’s office will determine if charges will be filed.
