Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has won Tuesday's Mississippi Democratic primary, while Bernie Sanders came out on top in Michigan -- a surprising and narrow victory, but significant win for the Democratic socialist who's been struggling to keep up with his rival.

Clinton's win in Michigan was her 12th of the 2016 campaign cycle, four more than Sanders. Clinton has won all eight contests in the South so far.

Though she won comfortably in Mississippi, she and Sanders were in a dogfight in Michigan, with Sanders slightly leading the whole way through and ultimately gaining just over half of the vote.

"I am grateful to the people of Michigan for defying the pundits and pollsters and giving us their support. This is a critically important night. We came from 30 points down in Michigan and we're seeing the same kind of come-from-behind momentum all across America," Sanders said of the win, prior to results being announced, according to NBC News.

He continued,"Not only is Michigan the gateway to the rest of the industrial Midwest, the results there show that we are a national campaign. We already have won in the Midwest, New England and the Great Plains and as more people get to know more about who we are and what our views are we're going to do very well."

Despite the win, Clinton still moves closer to the general election in what appears to be a looming face-off against Donald Trump, unless another Republican candidate -- most realistically, Ted Cruz -- manages to keep racking up delegates. And fast.
