LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — As we prepare to fight flu season and the pandemic rages on, the medicine you take to keep you healthy may actually cause you harm.

Dr. Tracey Wakefield of Las Vegas and Regional Medical with Partners in Primary Care is dedicated to increasing awareness about the dangers of keeping unused and expired prescription drugs in your home.

"Users may obtain prescription drugs right out of their friends or family medicine cabinets so it's important to get rid of that medicine for multiple reasons," Wakefield said.

Wakefield says most prescription ingredients aren't the best for your health either, and sometimes keeping medications in your cabinet can lead to drug addiction.

You should check your medicine cabinet every six to 12 months to make sure no medicine has expired.
