MOUNTAIN SPRINGS (KTNV) — A winter storm has led to major road closures across the region as snow and rain make driving conditions treacherous for thousands headed home from the Christmas holiday.

Authorities shut down Blue Diamond Road, also called State Route 160, for several hours Thursday after snow pounded the higher elevations between Las Vegas and Pahrump.

"We are from Mesa, Arizona we are going to Pahrump to visit my brother and sister-in-law for the weekend," said Norma Leifheit, as she waited in the closure.

Nevada Department of Transportation snow plows worked for several hours to make the highway passable.

"I have turned around twice, I came over the pass to go to work and because of the weather there was no work so I'm trying to get back home," said Robin Quadlin, a Pahrump resident.

Authorities were able to open the road around 1:45 p.m., Thursday.

Road crews expect colder temperatures may lead to very icy conditions and travel is discouraged until the storm passes and road conditions improve.
