LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — With the Academy Awards just a few days away, 13 Action News went "Around Town" and discovered a film creator who’s well on her way to receiving her own Oscar.

"I hear people saying; I wish I could win this award or that award," said local director Iris Chinchilla. "I will win an Academy Award."

Those are real words from what some may call “the next biggest star out of Vegas.”

Meet Iris Chinchilla. She’s a self-taught director, producer, and writer with a love for the industry and all things creative.

Almost ten years ago, Chinchilla moved from her Texas home to Las Vegas with just two suitcases and a book-bag and a tremendous vision to make it in a field that’s mostly male-dominated.

Recently, she finished her first documentary-style film, “Slab City 2 Alaska" - it can be found on YouTube.

Chinchilla is proud of her Latino heritage and counts women like Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, and Lisa Winther Huston as her inspirations.

She also counts local entrepreneur and actor, Andrew Cartwright, as a mentor in the business.

Now, Chinchilla is working on a new documentary, “Las Gayvus” - spotlighting the lives of nine members of the Las Vegas LGBTQ community.
