A local couple and their church, His Word Christian Center, have found a way to give back beyond our community. Three times a year, Sergio and Marta Alvarado make trips to Mexico to deliver backpacks, school supplies, and toys.

The couple works all year to collect donations from all over the valley.

"If it's a big item, we have to find someone with a truck so they can help us to bring the big item," said Marta Alvarado.

Sometimes they make 10 trips all over town in just one day. They collect new and gently used items. The couple sells the new stuff and uses the money to buy backpacks, school supplies, and toys for kids in Las Vegas and Mexico.

"We show the love that we have to have for people," said Alvarado. "It means that we live in a blessed country."

The Alvarados learned throughout their work, kids in our country sometimes have more than one backpack. Families are able to donate the second or third backpack to their organization so somebody less fortunate can use it.

"What you get when you hand that to the people, to the kids, your rewards, is their smile in your face."

The couple takes about three trips to Mexico each year. If they get enough backpack donations, they hope to make another trip before next school year.

If you have any items you want the Alvarados to pick up, call Sergio at 702-981-0920. You can also call him to learn how to buy one of the items.

They also take check donations to buy backpacks, school supplies and toys. You just make the check out to H.W.C.C.

The couple is also in need of an old truck to pick up bigger donations around town. They are hoping you might have an idea.
