UPDATE JAN. 15: The motorcyclist killed in this crash has been identified as 34-year-Charles Kirkling from Las Vegas, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

ORIGINAL STORY: A Las Vegas police officer was involved in a fatal crash near Buffalo Drive and Mountains Edge Parkway.

Nevada Highway Patrol says the off-duty officer was on the way to work when the officer was involved in the crash with a motorcyclist.

Investigators say a four-door vehicle was heading eastbound on Mountains Edge, turning left onto Buffalo and a Honda sport bike was heading in the opposite direction on Mountains Edge.

The two crashed, sending the motorcyclist flying about forty feet across the intersection.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

“From what we believe the motorcycle was speeding going westbound," says Trooper Jason Buratczuk.

The other driver was an off-duty Las Vegas police officer who was on his way in to work.

He was injured in the crash and was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.

NHP is hoping dash camera footage taken by someone at the scene will give a better idea as to what happened.

“As soon as we’re able to see that i think it will play a big part in our investigation.”
