UPDATE: Officers identified in deadly shooting on Spanish Heights Drive

UPDATE DEC. 10: The officers involved in the Dec. 8 shooting on Spanish Heights Drive have been identified by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as Officer Malik Grego-Smith and Officer Dustin Xaypanya.

Officer Grego-Smith is 40 years old and has been employed with the LVMPD since 2008. He is assigned to the Community Policing Division, Summerlin Area Command.

Officer Xaypanya is 25 years old and has been employed with the LVMPD since 2018. He is assigned to the Community Policing Division, Summerlin Area Command.

The officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of this incident.

UPDATE DEC. 9: The Clark County Coroner has identified the dead man as 40-year-old Nathaniel Sironen. Sironen's cause and manner of death have not yet been released.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) -- Las Vegas police are investigating a burglary attempt and deadly shooting involving officers, according to the department.

Authorities say they received reports of a burglary shortly before 1:30 a.m. at a residence on Spanish Heights Drive, near Tropicana Avenue and Durango Drive.

The caller told police the burglar was armed and inside the building.

When officers arrived, the department says they found a man trying to attack the resident with a hammer. That's when the officers fired "several rounds."

The alleged burglar was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the 18th shooting involving Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2020.

Per the LVMPD policy, the identity of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours.

This is an ongoing investigation.
