LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Pioneering actress Cicely Tyson has passed away at the age of 96.
Her career inspired many, including local entertainers like Torrey Russel.
"As an actress, she blew the world away," he said of his former mentor. "At a time when African Americans weren't accepted in the entertainment industry, she chose to stand up and not to anything less than the absolute best."
Russel founded the Las Vegas theater program Broadway in the HOOD, which brings writing and acting opportunities to at-risk youth.
