Family endures near-record heat without air conditioning

A Las Vegas family spent several days sweating out hot temperatures after their air conditioner stopped working.

Mahteme "Matt" Zewdie says his unit stopped working at his rental condominium on Monday. Zewdie alerted his landlord to the problem soon after.

Zewdie says temperatures in his condo reached 90 degrees, making sleeping for him and his 4-year-old son nearly impossible.

"Outside, it's windy, you can get air," said Zewdie. "At home, it's suffocating, it's hot and it can give you a headache," added Zewdie.

Zewdie says he waited for days for his landlord's home warranty company to inspect the air conditioning unit. He admits he refused his landlord's offer for a portable air conditioner citing a failure last year in which he accepted the offer but it lead to a 15 day air conditioning repair.

"I have good patience, I don't give [my landlord] a hard time."

But patience did run out by Friday.

Contact 13 reached out to the owner of the condo and learned the home warranty company sent a repair technician out, but the air conditioning unit needed a repair.

The part was not available and needed to be order, which extended the repair time.

On Friday, the condo owner tells Contact 13, she is fed up with her home warranty company's performance and was prepared to hire an air conditioning repair company herself.

Contact 13 has learned an air conditioning repair company did service the unit and it is now functioning.
