Thanksgiving isn't just about the turkey and shopping.  This week also kicks off "proposal season".

The holidays are the most popular time of the year to get engaged.  Proposal season starts Thanksgiving and ends after Valentine's Day in February.

According to The Knot, nearly 40% of annual engagements happen during the holidays, and most of those couples are looking for ways to save.

"Couples are always looking for ways to save for their wedding," says Amanda Goetz with The Knot.  "It's the most expensive day of their lives, so whenever they can save a little bit, they're looking to do so."

  1. Rethink your timing.  Saturday weddings are the most expensive.  If you opt for a Friday or Sunday wedding instead, you could save 20% per guest.
  2. Shop sample sales and trunk shows for a dress.  This can cut the price of your dress by up to 80%.
  3. Try sending digital RSVPs instead of traditional invites.  Invites and save the dates cost brides, on average, $300-400.
