LATEST:  Neighbors are grateful that firefighters were able to save their homes.

"I was right here wiping the windows," said Silvia Brunn.

That's when she realized her neighbor's house had gone up in flames.

"The palm tree over here is right next to the wall," she said.

Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading. Firefighters were inside when the smoke got thicker.

"We had to go to a defensive operation because it just got worse," said Tim Szymanski of Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters escaped before the roof collapsed.

Neighbors said they're thinking of the homeowner who lost everything in the blaze.

"It's about the worst thing that can happen other than death when you lose a home," said Brunn.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
