Former Las Vegas Mayor Ron Lurie has died

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A former Las Vegas mayor is dead at the age of 79.

Officials are remembering Mayor Ron Lurie who served from 1987 to 1991. He was elected mayor after running against casino owner Bob Stupak.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of former Las Vegas Mayor Ron Lurie," Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak tweeted. "Ron was a dear friend & an exceptional public leader who devoted two decades of his life to public service. Kathy and I are holding the Lurie family close in our hearts."

Lurie, who was a gaming executive, served on the city council before being elected as mayor. After serving as mayor, he became the executive vice president and general manager of Arizona Charlie's.
