A vacant apartment building caught fire east of downtown Las Vegas Sunday morning.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to the 2400 block of Sunrise Avenue, near Eastern Avenue and Fremont Street, around 4:45 after a passer-by reported smoke in the area.

On arrival, smoke was in the area, but the fire was not visible from the street. Upon examination, firefighters found a fire in a rear apartment in the one story wood frame apartment building.

The building was vacant and boarded up. There were no utilities connected to the building.

The fire gutted and was confined to one apartment. Damage was estimated at $20,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire investigators said there was evidence that squatters were staying in the apartment.

The building was boarded up and secured before firefighters left the scene.
