Fire crews responded to an apartment complex fire near Valley View Boulevard and Twain Avenue Monday morning.

Firefighters received the call around 7:22 a.m.

One firefighter was injured by a falling brick and one resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Two apartments had smoke damage and two apartments had water damage. The exact costs have not yet been determined.

Eight adults and four children were displaced due to the fire. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the families.

"I think I lost everything," said resident Patrice Pochmara.

She also had to go without her medicine, leaving her family while on a stretcher.

Janice Burris helped residents in the fire.

"My dog tried to go to the building she's a trained service dog, which is weird for her, and I started up on the backside of the building screaming, beating on gates hollering get out there's a fire," she said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
