ELY (AP) — A rural schoolhouse built in eastern Nevada's White Pine County 103 years ago has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Lund Grade Schoolhouse on State Highway 318 about 25 miles south of Ely served the White River Valley from 1915 until the White Pine County School District closed it in 2005. It was the longest continuously operated public educational facility in the county.
Marion Francis of the Lund Historical Society says many of the students who graduated from the school returned to teach as adults in the same classrooms where they were taught.
The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced the listing Monday by the National Park Service.
The National Register of Historic Places was established in 1966 to recognize historic resources important to national, state, and local history.
