A young man is dead after a shooting Thursday night.

The shooting was reported at 8 p.m. in the 900 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard, east of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Police confirm the young man was shot and killed outside the West Las Vegas Arts Center, a library along Lake Mead Boulevard. His body was found near the basketball courts in Doolittle Park.

He was identified as 19-year-old Javante Stockard. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest after being taken to University Medical Center.

Homicide detectives determined the shooting took place in a parked car at the location. When police interviewed the person responsible for the shooting, police said it appears the shooting was accidental.

Charges will be considered by the Clark County District Attorney in coordination with homicide detectives.
