UPDATE: Mother accused of killing 3-year-old Daniel Theriot sentenced

UPDATE FEB. 19: Cassie Smith, mother of 3-year-old Daniel Theriot, was sentenced Wednesday morning.

21-year-old Cassie Smith was sentenced 10 to 25 years for 2nd degree murder and 4 to 20 years for child abuse, neglect and endangerment, Smith will serve the sentences consecutively.

Smith reported Theriot missing on Sept. 3, 2018. His body was found a day later near Lake Mead. Her boyfriend, Joshua Oxford, has already been sentenced.

The mother of Daniel Theriot has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Cassie Smith, 21, told police on Sept. 3, 2018, that her son Daniel Theriot had disappeared from Sunset Park. She claimed that the child walked away.

The park was evacuated and a massive manhunt began. His body was found a day later in the desert near Lake Mead.

Smith and her boyfriend, Joshua Oxford, were arrested a short time later.

Police said at the time that the manner in which the child was killed was "absolutely disturbing" and there was "nothing accidental" about the child's death.

Oxford has already been sentenced to prison.
