LAS VEGAS (KTNV) -- Las Vegas police are investigating a deadly shooting involving the department overnight.
The incident began during a traffic stop near The Strip on, Joe W Brown Drive and Karen Avenue, shortly after 11 p.m. on Sept. 8.
During the stop, the department says officers learned the driver was wanted for a felony warrant and was considered to be armed and dangerous. While waiting for backup, police say the man drove away from officers -- leading to a chase.
At one point, police say the vehicle turned onto Las Vegas Boulevard from Sahara Avenue, where officers were able to stop the vehicle.
Once stopped, police say the driver left the car and ran down the street with a knife. Officers chased him and told him to stop running, which he allegedly disregarded.
Police say the man turned towards officers and ran towards them armed with the knife. That's when the officers then shot and hit the man, the department says. It is not clear how many officers fired their weapons at this time.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the coroner's office.
This is the 15th shooting involving Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for 2020.
Per LVMPD policy, the identity of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours. This is an ongoing investigation.
