Las Vegas hotels, restaurants celebrate Chinese New Year 2019

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Many spots around the valley are gearing up for Chinese New Year.

At the Venetian hotel-casino, visitors able to enjoy a traditional lion dance celebrating "The Year of the Pig" on Tuesday.

Where the resort also has an installation that features a colossal golden pig sculpture.

From the noodles to the dumplings, there's a meaning behind the food, but the new year is about spending time and celebrating with family.

Also, children love this time of the year as they ask their elders for a red envelope with "lucky money" inside.

"Usually they give them to the children or anyone who is not married. So once you get married, you don't get it anymore," said Dell Wong, Vegas resident.

Many Chinese Americans like Dell say family time is a big part of the Lunar New Year.

"My favorite thing is to spend time with family," said Wong.

Food is a significant part of the Lunar New Year celebrations, and a centerpiece as each dish has a different meaning.

Dell said she spends most of her time working near Chinatown at the Joyful House Chinese Cuisine - where they have been preparing for the large holiday crowds.

Maine lobster represents energy and power, paired with noodles for long life.
