LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Today is National Bike to School Day and Clark County School District is hoping students will either bike or walk to school.

It's part of the district's Safe Routes to School program, but the idea is generating some mixed reaction.

13 Action News spoke with some parents at Shelley Berkley Elementary who say their kids will not be participating.

“I would never let her walk to school here, or ride a bike or a scooter, not even a chance,” says Thomas Mark, parent.

Shelley Berkley Elementery is near Faiss Middle School, where a 12-year-old boy was killed by a car on Fort Apache in March.

“We have cross-guards but we need something to help out with the traffic going that way with all the children,” says Edmond McDuffie, parent.

18 Las Vegas Valley elementery schools are participting in the program.
