UPDATE: Needles Highway reopens, Big Bend fire remains about 50% contained

UPDATE 5:06 P.M. AUG. 19: No progress is being made on the brush fire that has closed Big Bend in Laughlin, but Needles Highway has been reopened. No injuries have been reported and no structures are being threatened, authorities say. The cause remains unknown at this time.

UPDATE 6:45 A.M. AUG. 19: According to the latest information from the Nevada Division of Forestry, the fire has burned between 200 and 225 acres with no forward progress at this time. It is still about 50% contained. No injuires have been reported and no structures are currently being threatened. Federal air support from Battle Mountain, along with an NDF helicopter will perform bucket drops on the fire today, as well as provide more accurate mapping. The Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area remains CLOSED until further notice.

ORIGINAL STORY
The Clark County Fire Department is assisting with a fire burning near Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area near Laughlin.

Park visitors had to be evacuated because of the fire, which has burned more than 100 acres. At last report, the fire was about 50 percent contained.

Needles Highway has been shut down in both directions and isn't expected to be open until noon today.

The cause of the wildfire, which started around 1 p.m. Saturday, is unknown at this time.
