The chief operating officer for Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air has stepped down.

52-year-old Steve Harfst had only been in that position for a little more than a year, joining in December 2014.

His resignation follows several questions about the airline's safety record and several high-profile incidents involving emergency landings and mechanical issues.

"The company will use this leadership change as an opportunity to refocus on operational needs and areas for improvement," Allegiant Air said in a statement.

Before Allegiant, Harsft had been the chief operating officer at IndiGo Airlines in India.
