LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — More than a dozen local leaders will be memorialized at the valley's newest park.

A total of 36 people were recognized during the annual African American Trailblazer Service Awards last month.

Inductees include:

  • The first African American metro Deputy Chief
  • The first African American Clark County school teacher
  • The first African American female professor at UNLV

All of the inductees will be memorialized at the Historic Westside Legacy Park for the work they did to bridge the divide in Southern Nevada.

"I was in the hands of folks who stood in the gap. Those folks who bent over when we today have an opportunity today to stand straight up," said former Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.

This is the first year names will be added to the park.

Las Vegas City Councilman Cedric Crear says the goal is to add new names annually.

Construction on the park is set to wrap up later this year.
