PALOMINO VALLEY, Nev. (AP) — Lady the horse is missing.

Her owner fears the mare that disappeared during a tribal roundup in Nevada's Palomino Valley may have been sent to a slaughterhouse in Canada or Mexico.

A federal judge in Reno extended a protective order last week prohibiting Lady's slaughter.

U.S. District Judge Miranda Du plans to hear Colleen Westlake's bid to prove the horse she bought from the state last year was taken illegally from Westlake's private property by the neighboring tribe.

But the judge refused to apply the order to more than 270 other horses rounded up in January by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and a contractor.

The tribe maintains that the horses strayed from their reservation north of Reno.

Tribal officials say they suspect Lady is still on the high-desert range.
