CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The first woman to serve as the state Senate's majority leader is a Clark County chief deputy district attorney who fellow lawmakers lauded as a fair-handed legislator.

Nevada Senate Democrats unanimously elected Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro to the leadership role following the resignation of former Sen. Kelvin Atkinson, who announced on Tuesday that he took campaign funds for personal use. Atkinson did not specify how he used the campaign funds for personal use, but said he will plead guilty when the time comes.

Cannizzaro is a Las Vegas native and was elected to the Nevada Senate in 2016. She is a graduate of the law school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
